Black women have historically dominated gymnastics, track and field, and tennis. Now, they’re getting behind a new wheel!

In February, Polaris — a global leader in the powersports industry — tapped more than 12 Black women in media for an unconventional Galentine’s Day adventure in the Mojave Desert of California. Traditionally, the holiday is celebrated among women over dinner, wine, and desserts, but the powersports brand gave select Black and brown women an invitation to “Think Outside” on Galentine’s Day.

“We want diverse women to confidently ‘Think Outside’ — feeling safe and welcomed to do so by seeing their peers and counterparts engage in our activations,” a Polaris rep shared with 247 Live Culture.

Per the outlet, the adventure began with a trip to Big Bear Lake, where women from varying backgrounds bonded over their excitement about the adventure as well as their lack of experience with offroading. After reaching the lodging destination, the group was greeted with personalized packages from the Polaris team, containing riding gear such as goggles, gloves, and jerseys. They then embarked on a second journey to Lucerne Valley, CA, to explore the Mojave Desert via the latest Polaris RZR.

As first-time riders, there was comfort in learning that Polaris provided its expertise with “ultimate off-road technology,” according to Sharmaine Johnson of 247 Live Culture. Ride Command is a nationwide off-road navigation system that helps riders keep track, communicate, and stay connected with other groups on the trail — with verification of more than a million miles of trails. Its Group Ride feature includes a “Follow the Leader” mode, allowing riders to select a group leader and follow at their own pace. With proper instruction and guidance from the Polaris team, the group was empowered with tools to hit the trails safely — providing a fulfilling Galentine’s “girl’s night.” Moreover, this adventure solidified the need for representation and diversity in outdoor spaces, according to the outlet.

“Our recent Galentine’s Day ride showcased Polaris’s dedication to diversifying Powersports. Going forward, we’re committed to elevating the visibility of black and brown women through additional ride opportunities and initiatives, while offering tangible support to their brands and endeavors in return,” Polaris shared in a statement.
